Steinhauers Make Lasting Impact Through Legacy Gift; Future Bequest

Jules Steinhauer

Philanthropy provides that infusion of capital and margin of excellence that makes nonprofits go from one level of extraordinary achievement to another, keeping pace with our ever-changing world. Such is the case with a legacy gift provided by Jules and Eleanor Steinhauer, decades-long members of the Naval War College Foundation and its Heritage Society. The Society is composed of donors who include the Foundation in their estate plans. Last year’s legacy gift from the couple established the LCDR Jules and Eleanor Steinhauer China Endowment to provide perpetual support to the U. S. Naval War College and the Foundation for China studies.

Jules, who passed away earlier this year, was a systems analyst with both NYNEX and Verizon. With a keen understanding of the link between power and telecommunications, he and his wife Eleanor focused their philanthropy on safeguarding the freedoms he once fought for during his service in the U. S. Navy. The revolutionary transformation and growth of China’s telecommunications industry over the past three decades left Jules particularly concerned about complacency and the security of America’s information networks.

“Their generosity allows us to host China-focused conferences and workshops for Navy-wide audiences to look deeply at the impact of China’s maritime expansion on American interests and the stability of the global maritime order,” said Peter A. Dutton, interim dean of the College’s Center for Naval Warfare Studies.

Both Eleanor and Jules understood the power of planned gifts. She remains a loyal member of The Heritage Society. The Steinhauers’ future generous bequest will enable the College and Foundation to continue their vital work advancing education, research, and programming including conferences, symposia, and other events in regional studies specifically related to China.

“The care and vision behind the Steinhauers’ gift and future bequest will make possible a variety of research, programs, and simulations that will advance education and curriculum development focusing on China as it relates to our national and global security,” said Foundation CEO George Lang.
